The 2016 Oscar Nomination for Best Picture

Every year the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science presents the Academy Awards a.k.a Oscar awards to recognize the cinematic achievements in the film industry during that year. First presented in 1929, the 88th edition of the awards will be presented on February 28 7pm EST (Eastern Standard Time).

There are a number of nominations across all categories. However, Best Picture, Best Actor in Leading Role and Best Actress in Leading Role categories garner a lot of attention. Here we take a look at the 8 movies that are nominated for the 2016 Oscars.

1. The Big Short

Directed by Adam McKay, The Big Short is the story of four outsiders to the Wall Street who predict the meltdowns of the housing market and big banks. The quartet amass a fortune through shrewd investing and exposing large financial institutions.

The film has big names like Brad Pitt, Christian Bale, Ryan Gosling and Steve Carell. The approach to a serious and complicated subject is made easy through the wonderful acting of all the stars. One of the best movies of 2016, you must definitely watch it once.

2. Bridge Of Spies

A story set during the Cold War between United States of America and Russia, Bridge of Spies is about a U.S pilot who is captured by Russia demanding a prisoner exchange to take things forward. Tom Hanks plays the role of a New York Lawyer who flies to Berlin to win freedom for the young U.S pilot.

The movie is directed by Academy Award Winning Director, Steven Spielberg and has Mark Rylance and Alan Alda in supporting roles. The wonderful piece of fiction based on facts is riveting to see on a large screen.

3. Brooklyn

An old-fashioned entertainment that is masterfully crafted to perfection, Brooklyn is about an Irish immigrant who resides in New York and falls in love with an Italian plumber. However, things do not go as planned when the leading actress visits her homeland and gets tempted by another man.

Saoirse Ronan plays the lead role in the movie and is ably supported by actors Emory Cohen, Domhnall Gleeson and Julie Walters.

4. Mad Max: Fury Road

Set in the word post-apocalypse, Mad Max: Fury Road is a riveting tale of two riders who want to escape the clutches of a wicked ruler who controls all water resources. The action takes place in the continent of Australia.

Directed by George Miller, Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron play the lead roles. Nicholas Hoult plays the role of the villain in the movie that was enjoyed by one and all.

5. The Revenant

The much-anticipated movie of 2015 was an eventual big hit. The Revenant is about an American explorer who gets attacked by a grizzly bear during one of his expeditions. He is left to die in freezing cold temperatures by his associates.

Leonardo Di Caprico who plays the lead role carries the movie forward. The desire for revenge and the will to win takes him through the wilderness. This is clearly one of the top 10 movies of Leonardo Di Caprico. He is also nominated for Best Actor for his role in the movie.

6. The Martian

The movie about an astronaut who is presumed dead and left behind by his comrades in the planet of Mars, is a wonderful tale on screen. Matt Damon plays the lead role in the movie. The left behind astronaut must find a way to survive on the planet he shares with none.

He establishes contact with NASA engineers and there is a global race against time to save the astronaut stuck on the unknown planet. A must-watch movie if you are a movie lover.

7. Room

The story of a young woman who tries to lead a normal life after being held in captivity for seven years is wonderful to look on screen. Brie Larson plays the lead role in the movie. She carries a 5-year-old son who only knows her as ‘Ma’.

The small movie leaves a very big impact on the audience. Directed by Lenny Abrahamson, this is a once-in-a-lifetime watch.

8. Spotlight

The movie is about a team of journalists investigating the allegations against a priest of molesting more than 80 boys. Directed by Tom McCarthy, the impact the movie has on the viewers is riveting. It is a gripping detective story with wonderful newsroom drama.
