Bajrangi Bhaijaan- Will it be a Hit or Miss?

Indian cinema is definitely going through a period of slack right now. Very few movies have been able to make any kind of impact on Bollywood or the masses and most flicks have just come and gone even if they’ve had a powerful star cast.

The year opened with movies like Roy starring Ranbir Kapoor and Tevar starring Arjun Kapoor but neither Kapoor’s could make a grand entry into 2015 with both flicks rating average at the box office.

The trend these days is to make mindless flicks that somehow reach the 100 crore club without any effort and very few movies are capable of stirring up emotions within us.

We have been tortured with movies like Dhoom 3, Jai Ho, Kick, which boast of a heavy star cast but do little to arouse interest. Even in recent times movies like Bombay Velvet from ambitious film makers like Anurag Kashyap have failed to generate much hype. The only film which stood out this year is Piku with endearing performances form Deepika Padukone and Amitabh Bachchan.

It appears that Kabir Khan (maker of films like New York) is going to be back with a blast with Bajrangi Bhaijaan with Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan in lead roles.

Bajrangi Bhaijaan Salman Khan

The story revolves around a Hindu Brahmin who moves to Chandni Chowk Delhi and a Muslim with whom she has a rift due to their differentiated ideologies. The story line seems promising and sounds as if it’ll surely stir some great emotions within us.

Kabir Khan has a penchant for story telling with movies like New York which tugged our heart strings with the tale of a wrongly accused Muslim in New York post the 9/11 attacks and how his whole life crumbles around him.

Kabir Khan himself has stated that this movie is Salman’s best yet and the audiences are surely going to love it. In a time where the country is rife with communal riots, honour killings, maybe we need more flicks like this to teach us what humanity is all about.

The movie came under fire due to Salman Khan’s court hearing which had put the movie on hiatus but Kabir Khan has confirmed that the movie will release this year on Eid in July which will sorely get the box office ringing with cash.

Eid has always been a lucky time for Bhai and this should seem no different. Bhai made huge bucks with blockbusters like Wanted, Dabangg, Ek Tha Tiger, Kick and Bodyguard all of which released during Eid. It seems as if that’s the time Bhai has Bollywood locked and ready to fire every year. Bajrangi Bhaijaan is undergoing its last leg of filming in Srinagar which will surely be a visual treat to all the fans. Srinagar has featured in a great number of movies like Mission Kashmir, Fanaa and Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani (without giving it due credit) and Kashmir surely is paradise on earth.

With a huge star cast, exotic locations and an Eid release Bajrangi Bhaijaan has everything in its favour. However what is yet to be seen is the skill of story-telling because that’s where many movies have failed to hold our imagination. Movies like Roy and Bombay Velvet have had a huge star cast to its credit but have been unable to make a mark.

Will Bajrangi Bhaijaan be able to dispel the dark spell on Bollywood and enter the elite club of 300 crores or even 100 crores?

Well only time and Eid can tell!
